This was inspired by a National Geographic story about naval officers (later in the sixties my father was on a destroyer in charge of nuclear tactics) sitting to watch the first atomic blast testing in the Bikini Islands in the middle of the Pacific. The ships ranged from about 15-40 miles away from the blast. They wore goggles for protection…
