Rediscovering my old method of running-photos, I
carried my friend's camera on a Christmas morning run as the sun
burned through the mist by the inlets in Westhampton.
*New* Costa Rica 2005
San Jose and Puerto Limon plus a few photos traveling
through the rainforest (needless to say it was wet, so photos
are from inside the car).

There is something very surreal about the natural

*New* Japan 2005

On the way to China I had a stopover in Tokyo where
somehow my passport and visa went missing... my overnight layover
turned into a two week extended stay in Japan. I made the best
of it and even managed to make a special side-trip. The famous
Kamakura Buddha statue, or Diabutsu, resonates as one of my favorite
contemplative places on earth.

Java & Bali Compilations, 2003-4
Java QuickTime slideshow
Bali QuickTime slideshow
Here are rough cut slideshow compilations, exploring
Java's Yogyakarta, Merapi, Prambanan and Borobudur. Bali travels
all over the island (however my camera broke and I had to borrow
my friends' cameras -- thanks guys!). Both are about 4MB and 6MB
respectively, so hopefully they will load and play quickly. Don't
forget, QuickTime is the best viewer, so if you don't have it
yet, get it for free here.
Uluwatu Kecak/Ramayana Dance, Bali, 2004
Picture Gallery
The ultimate setting: a uniquely Balinese dance performance
on cliffs looking out into the sunset over the Indian Ocean. Monkeys
'welcome' you, and it is an unforgettable experience – one
which I ran out of batteries to film everything. However, my roommate
Khipra saved the day and took some great pictures included within
this gallery to make it complete.
Uluwatu Temple, Bali, 2004
Picture
Gallery
The temple is famous for its location on the Uluwatu
cliffs. One time I was there during a full moon festival in full
attendance. Khipra had better weather and took some great sunset
pics which are also included here.
Beaches of Bali, 2004
Picture Gallery
I rarely bring my camera with me to the beach to
avoid sand as much as theft. However, I managed to put this gallery
together of random shots to give an idea of what some of the beaches
look like in Bali.
Children's performance, Nusa Dua Westin, 2004
Picture
Gallery
A troupe of Balinese children came to perform for
us at our hotel. Unfortunately I couldn't get good shots of the
actual event -- I don't like using flash in performers' eyes,
however afterward it erupted into the most joyous gaggles of glee.
Once the kids figured out that they could instantly see the shots
of themselves on the screen of the camera, all jockularity broke
loose. Some of the cutest kids I've ever seen.
Dancing Ceremony, South Ubud, Bali, 2004
Picture
Gallery
Quite by accident I stumbled upon a most surreal
and beautiful ceremony just south of Ubud which I just had to
pull over and see. People smiled at my interest in the activities,
so the camera was allowed to capture the moment.
Kecak Dance, Bali, 2004
Picture Gallery
This was made famous by the cinematic masterpiece Baraka which toured the
globe with 70mm camera filming some of nature and mankind's most remarkable
manifestations. While this is a smaller group, the evening setting
with fire
makes for a
surreal theatre with the famous "ketchaketachaketcaketchak"
buzzing in the air.
Ubud, Bali, 2004
Picture Gallery
Ubud is a favorite place. It is described as an artisan
colony and makes some of the best window shopping in the world
for authentic arts and crafts, but the vibe there is really what
makes it a special destination.
Rice Fields, North Ubud, Bali, 2004
Picture Gallery
The terraced fields are quite a sight in their pristine
setting. We will
evetually make it
to the more mountainous regions, however these should give a sense
of the
agricultural serenity.
Borobudur, Indonesia, 2003
Picture Gallery
This famous Buddhist temple, restored with UNESCO's
help, is built in three layers - a pyramidal base with five concentric
square terraces, a cone with three circular platforms and at the
top, a monumental stupa. The walls and balustrades are decorated
with bas-reliefs, covering a total surface of 2,500 square metres.
Around the circular platform are seventy-two openwork stupas,
each containing a statue of Buddha.
Prambanan, Indonesia, 2003
Picture Gallery
Built in the 10th century, this is the largest temple
compound dedicated to Shiva in Indonesia. Rising above the centre
of the last of these concentric squares are three temples decorated
with reliefs illustrating the epic of the Ramayana, dedicated
to the three great Hindu divinities (Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma)
and three temples dedicated to the animals who serve them.

Climb
Climbing an active volcano is a rare opportunity
and unforgettable experience. The sulphur fumes near the crater
are quite intense, but the view and other-worldly terrain is worth
the straight-up, 2am climb to reach the summit by dawn. Two galleries:
the climb and the scenery. For those with bandwidth: QuickTime

New Zealand/Australia Compilation
QuickTime slideshow
(please be patient since it takes a little extra
time to download)
I made this compilation to offer the best of my travels
to New Zealand and Australia in one show (including new photos
of the Gold Coast and Sydney). Sit back, turn up the sound, relax
–if you want to see the softer dissolves instead of clunky
Windows transitions, get QuickTime
(free download)– and escape to some of the most beautiful
scenery in the world.
Cairns, Australia, 2003
QuickTime slideshow
Picture Gallery
Cairns in January is a time of extremes: extreme
heat, extreme humidity, extremely dangerous conditions (deadly
jellyfish, sharks, crocodiles, snakes, bats, critters, etc.).
The irony is that while Cairns should be having 3 meters of rain,
it barely has 1 this year. The drought has knocked many things
out of whack, but I somehow got out in the bush anyway: from Aboriginal
didgeridoos to the rain forests of Cape Tribulation, Daintree,
Green Island, Lake Barrine, Kuranda Tropical Tablelands, Mossman
Gorge to the ritzy Port Douglas.
South Island, New Zealand, 2002
QuickTime slideshow
Picture Gallery
The South Island of New Zealand is where most of
the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed. The show begins
with the ferry to Picton and then travels up to Arthur's Pass
and Limestone with its large rock formations. It then takes flight
over the Southern Alps, crosses the Shotover River and takes a
boat ride through Milford Sound with its snowcapped peaks, waterfalls
and seals sunning on the rocks. It then takes flight again by
the West Coast and then towards Queenstown, finishing in golden
fields near Wanaka.
Taupo, New Zealand 2002
QuickTime slideshow
Picture Gallery
Lake Taupo is in the middle of the North Island with a lot of
geothermal activity in the area around it. The hot springs and
steaming streams provided a sharp contrast to the cold, raging
Huka Falls. Craters of the Moon offered surreal bubbling sulfur
pools and landscape. The ground there is super hot. I found out
the hard way when I ventured off the marked path to get a closer
shot...

These first pictures of my trip were all taken on a morning run
at 6:30a.m. over the course of 1 hour. It travels along the Waikato
River to reach the Hamilton Gardens and then return back to the
bridge.
Thailand, Jan 2002
Picture Gallery
I bought my digital camera and took my first shots while on a
diving trip to Thailand in the Pi Pi Islands. Pi Pi Le was where
they filmed the movie "The Beach", supposedly
the most beautiful, pristine, "hidden" beach in the
world...
